The lilacs first started to bloom at the end of those hot weeks we had at the end of April. We were starting to get worried about them being spent too quickly for the Lilac Festival and general enjoyment at the traditional time in the middle of May. But the chilly weather (but no hard frosts!) over the next week or two slowed things down.

Beautiful picture!
Remember, if you are planning on pruning your lilacs this year , do so after the blooms are spent.
Good point about pruning. When we moved in in 2005, this lilac bush was out of control. Every year since after blooming we've pruned back a hefty portion of the bush. The sooner you do it after blooming, the more time the plant can recover and grow in the direction you want it to. I'll have to add a post about my pruning when I do it in a couple weeks.
